Desperate Measures – A Book Review

I actually finished this book about a week ago, but I had to wait a few days to calm down before I could write up a review. Because holy lord, did this book ever get me revved up! It’s one thing to know that Katee Robert is excellent with writing steamy, hot, panty-dripping BDSM romance. It’s another thing to be hit over the head with it again and again in each chapter. Seriously, I’m getting uncomfortable sitting at my desk writing this.

Want to know more about what I think of Desperate Measures? Read on below! Before you go any further, though, please note that this book comes with some content warnings. There’s some emotional abuse by a parent, death of a parent, consensual non-consent, and general BDSM themes.

Desperate Measures – Katee Robert – Wicked Villains Book 1

Goodreads rating: 3.61 stars / 7,235 ratings / 1,300 reviews

My overall rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Wicked Villains series, this is Katee Robert’s retelling of some of the most well-known and classic fairytales of all time. Captain Hook is a dominant who protects his sub, Tink, from her evil ex-boyfriend, Peter Pan. Gaeton and Beast are involved in a steamy MMF threesome with the quiet and shy Belle. Hades owns Meg and Hercules in every way possible. And to kick off the series, we have Desperate Measures, the story of how Jafar offers Jasmine his protection and she happily accepts his wicked punishment in all forms.

I want Jasmine confined…
My collar on her neck, its chain never far from my hand.
I want her on her knees in subservience.
I want to fucking ruin her.

Jasmine has led a very sheltered and abused life in the midst of her father’s criminal empire. She grew up to know what she wanted but with no agency to get it on her own. She was ready to break free and make a life of her own when everything in her world changed. Her father was murdered by his right-hand man, Jafar, in a bid to take the territory for himself. And as far as Jafar was concerned, Jasmine was part of the property that he obtained. This kicks off a daddy/babygirl kink relationship that gets ridiculously filthy in a super quick way.

There are ropes and boundaries, permission and non-consent, punishment and orgasms, and it goes on, and on, and ON, chapter after chapter. This book doesn’t hold back anything in the sex department, and at the same time Robert manages to tell a story about two people who are looking for something in the abyss and who find it with each other. The sex and the story work to equally support each other, developing the characters at the forefront of this book while also establishing a world for future stories and future relationships. This is something different from a lot of other erotic novels, which can be a little porn-y and focused on sex with little to no plot.

So what kept this book from being a 5-star review in my eyes? Honestly, it was the lack of romance. This book is sensual, erotic, wicked, and emotional. But not what I would necessarily call “romantic”. Bear in mind that I’m basically being nitpicky. I should go back and give this book a 5-star review. It deserves the applause.
